Ground mahlab, also called mahleb, mahlap or mehlepi, is a popular Greek and Lebanese spice with a flavour that’s reminiscent of Bakewell tarts – think almonds and sour cherries. It’s traditionally used to flavour Greek Easter breads and Lebanese breads.
Ground mahlab is made from the ground stones of St Lucie cherries. Add to spiced biscuits along with cinnamon and nutmeg, try it in Christmas cakes or even in homemade custard and crème pâtissier.
Ingredients: mahleb (ground).
