Annas Pepparkakor original ginger thins are an iconic Swedish biscuit – with warm festive spicing and a delicate ‘snap’. Traditionally eaten at Christmas, ginger thins are commonly decorated with fine white icing and hung in windows, or given to friends and family over the holidays.Â
However, these biscuits are great at any time of year. Enjoy the classic Swedish pairing of ginger biscuit and blue cheese, or use them as a base for lingonberry cheesecake. Alternatively, simply serve with butter and a slice of cheese at the end of a meal.
Pepparkakor biscuits have a long history in Sweden, and are said to date back to the 14th century, when nuns of the Vadstena monastery first started baking biscuits to aid digestion, decorated with symbols. For many years they were eaten year-round, but more recently have become a part of Christmas celebrations.
A common game is to hold a pepparkakor thin in your palm and press it – if it breaks into three pieces you can make a wish!
Annas Pepparkakor is one of Sweden’s best loved brands, and is synonymous with the nation’s signature thins. Today, the biscuits are made using the same recipe created by company founders – sisters Anna and Emma Karlsson who began baking in their Stockholm kitchen, in 1929.
